Journalism

I’ve been a journalist for almost 20 years!!

My work has taken many forms during that time. As a youngster I was arts editor of the New Statesman, and also did a lot of reporting from around the world, from Latin America to China. I did a big feature for the Observer on the Colombian guerrilleras, for example, and met a lot of women who fought for various armed groups. I also did interviews with the likes of Patti Smith, Manu Chao and David Lynch, and won an Amnesty International award for human rights journalism for my campaign against detaining children for immigration reasons.

After having kids myself I did a pivot, and wrote a regular column about family life for the New Statesman, which eventually led to my first novel, On The Up. Since then I’ve done some opinion and feature writing for the Guardian and a lot of literary criticism. I now work at the Times and Sunday Times, where I regularly review books, like this one by Anna Funder.
